Having a website is a wonderful way to speak with members, alumni, sponsors, industry leaders and professionals. Any club that is interested in effectively communicating to a mass group realizes the necessity for a website.
The ASCE student chapter at California State University, Sacramento realizes this and has been taking great efforts in order to provide a fully-functioning, professional and easy to navigate website for student and professional use.
At the beginning of Fall 2016, major steps were taken to overhaul the website to bring it in to the "modern era". Changes included revisions to the website domain, strengthening of the server protection to guard against malicious intent, and additions of utilities which would allow for students and officers to communicate more effectively.
Over the winter months however, officers of the CSUS ASCE student chapter came to a unanimous decision - redo the website on a free hosting site.
Why switch to free?
As we all know within this industry, nothing is free. The cost of owning a website is roughly $120-$150 per year due to hosting and ownership rights.
In order to fund this cost, membership fees and grants would need to be used to pay. This in turn means less money for the club.
By making the switch to a free model of hosting, it becomes possible for us to reallocate the money to other sections of our student chapter.
How does this affect me?
Switching to a free model has some draw backs. For one, some site features may require more time to implement. The website's domain name now sports the ".weebly" subdomain. By doing this, we have authorized the web host "Weebly" to advertise products and other such ads on our website in exchange for a minimum allotted space on their servers. If this is a problem for you, simply download a popup blocker or don't click the advertisements.
We currently DO NOT monetize off this website.
Lastly, we ask that all students refrain from clicking any links made by comments. All official comments will be within the main body of posts and NEVER in comment sections. We will NEVER ask you for passwords or personal information beyond required Sacramento State info.
If something looks fishy, report it! We will do our best to monitor the website to ensure student safety and accuracy of information.
Many changes will be implemented to this new website as time goes on. As officer and student input filters in, changes will be made to best reflect and benefit members and students.
If you ever feel that there is a change which could better aid you in your learning objectives or make your experience better, please utilize the "Website Suggestions" page to provide your comments to the CSUS ASCE Student Chapter officers.
We thank you in advance for your assistance.
